PITTSBURGH --- Despite a strong third quarter, a slow start stifled Carlow University women's basketball in an 80-51 loss to (RV) Midway (Ky.) University in River States Conference action Saturday.

The Eagles (11-6, 6-1 RSC), who are "receiving votes" in the most recent NAIA Coaches' Top-25 Poll, jumped out to a 20-5 lead over the Celtics (5-11, 0-7 RSC) in the first quarter.

Midway pushed its lead to 30 heading into halftime ahead, 45-15.

The Celtics came out of the locker room down but not out, and applied pressure to the Eagles throughout the third quarter.

Carlow went on a 13-0 run to cut Midway's lead to 23, but the deficit remained at 23 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Eagles forced seven Carlow turnovers in the fourth and walked away with the win.

Sydney Carr led the Celtics with 14 points and five assists.

Emiley Hillgartner added 11 points, and Megan Ost pulled down 13 boards in the effort.

Shaelyn Clark added three steals, three assists and eight points.

The Eagles scored 26 points off 24 Carlow turnovers and shot 44.4 percent (32 for 72) from the field compared to Carlow's 29.7 (19 for 64).

Midway scored 48 points off the bench to Carlow's nine.

The Celtics out-rebounded the Eagles, 48-44, and shot 78.6 percent (11 for 14) from the free throw line on the night.

Carlow returns to action Thursday, Jan. 12 when they host Brescia (Ky.) University for a 6 p.m. RSC game at Oakland Catholic High School.
