TUCSON, Ariz. - The Macalester College baseball team began conference play today, taking on St. Scholastica. Both teams walked away with a win, with the Saints taking game one 8-4, and the Scots winning game two 10-5. Macalester's record is now 9-7 (1-1 MIAC).

To begin game one, St. Scholastica took a 1-0 lead. However, the Scots answered in the bottom of the first with two runs. Senior Joe Margolis (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) brought home fellow senior Anthony Palma (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) with an RBI double. Then, Margolis scored, off an RBI double by junior Matt Mukai (Foster City, Calif./Aragon). In the third, the Saints were able to score five runs and take a 6-2 lead. Macalester fought back in the fifth, with Margolis scoring his second run of the game and sophomore Evan Burns (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) being brought home by junior Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis). Despite the Scots' rally, the Saints were able to put up two more runs and win game one 8-4.

St. Scholastica once again took a 1-0 lead after the top of the first. Yet, the Macalester bats were hot in the bottom of the inning. Margolis and first year Nathan Gumagay (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) had back-to-back hits to get on base. Then the Scots hit three back-to-back RBI singles. Odom brought home Margolis, Mukai brought home Gumagay and first year Niko Alexander (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) plated Odom. Then sophomore Hayes Waddell (North Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) smashed an RBI double, plating Mukai. Alexander and Waddell were also able to score to take a 6-1 lead. Macalester increased its lead to 8-1 in the bottom of the fourth, when Margolis hit one out of the park, bringing sophomore Bowman Wingard (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) too.

The Saints took two runs back in the top of the fifth, to make it 8-3, but Macalester answered with a run at the bottom of the inning. Junior Charlie Burton (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) hit an RBI single to center field that brought home Mukai. The Saints scored two more runs in the game and Odom hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth to plate first year Stephen Paulsen (Middleton, Wis./Middleton). Macalester took the game 10-5.

Margolis scored four runs between the two games and registered three RBIs. Odom had four RBIs on the day, while Burton had two in the game two victory. Senior Thomas Windels (New York, N.Y./Episcopal) got the victory on the mound while sophomore Shun Mizuno (Irving, Texas/Ranchview) registered the save.

Macalester's next doubleheader will be Saturday April 8. The Scots head to St. Peter, Minn. to face MIAC opponent Gustavus. The first game will be at 1:00 p.m.
