GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman outdoor track and field teams will compete at the 2023 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships this Monday and Tuesday at Western Carolina's Catamount Athletic Complex in Cullowhee, N.C. The two-day meet will be marks the 98th championship for the men and the 36th for the women.
The championships will air live on ESPN+ on Tuesday, with coverage starting at 4 p.m. Monday's finals will be interspersed into the Tuesday broadcast. Live results, daily recaps, photos and video highlights can be found at www.SoConSports.com.
Monday's schedule gets under way with the start of the decathlon at 12 p.m., followed by the start of the pentathlon at 12:15. The women's hammer throw final gets the field events started at 12:30 p.m., with the first track event, the preliminaries of the women's 1,500-meter run, slated to begin at 4 p.m. In all, 12 champions will be crowned on the first day of competition – four on the track and eight in field events.
Tuesday's schedule opens with resumption of the decathlon at 12 p.m., with the heptathlon resuming at 12:15. Field events begin with the women's shot put and men's discus finals at 2:15 p.m. and the women's 4x100-meter relay gets the track events started at 4 p.m. The day concludes with the women's and men's 4x400-meter relays at 7:25 and 7:35, respectively, followed by the awards ceremony. Thirty events will crown champions on the final day of the meet.
Last season, the Paladin men finished fourth with 95 points, while the Paladin women placed fifth with 94 points, Furman's highest point total on the women's side since 2018.
Furman boasts a pair of returning champions on the women's side, as Emily Little claimed the Paladins' third straight title in the 10,000m run last year and Nicole Matysik won the 3,000m steeplechase. Madelynne Cadeau returns after being chosen the 2022 SoCon Freshman of the Year. On the men's side, Cameron Ponder, who did not compete in the 2022 SoCon Championships, is the meet record-holder in the 3,000m steeplechase, with his time of 8:49.66 from 2021. Madelynne Cadeau was the 2022 Freshman of the Year.
Robertson currently leads the SoCon in the women's 5,000m (16:23.71), while Kaylie Armitage holds the conference's best time in the women's 1,500m (4:20.56). For the men, Carson Williams is first in the league in both the 1,500m (3:44.70) and the 3,000m steeplechase (8:43.56). His steeplechase time ranks 12th on the NCAA East Preliminaries qualifying list. Adam Beucler holds the top time in the 5,000m at 14:08.47 and the 10,000m at 29:05.27 and currently ranks 39th in the East in the 10,000m.
